We’re excited to release the 2022 vintage of our ‘Duck, Duck, Cat’ Grenache!

2022 was a solid year for both quality and quantity and one of the first where the environment was on our side (full vintage report here).

Late summer rain caused some botrytis issues for us in the Grenache, which we avoided by handpicking on the 5th of April. I like using whole bunch in the Grenache, but through an abundance of caution, we ran everything through the destemmer to remove any possible nasties. An otherwise ordinary fermentation on skins for 7 days was followed by oak maturation for 13 months. The wine was pulled from barrel in June 2023. Gravity settled and racked a couple of times, the 2022 Duck, Duck, Cat Grenache was sent for bottling in August 2023.

We’re proud to announce that through your support of Duck, Duck, Cat Grenache, we have now donated over $3,300 to Barossa Wildlife Rescue, and will continue to donate $3 from every bottle sold.

There was so much to like about this wine, and not just the fact that it had a drawing of two ducks and a cat on the label. The nose was vibrant and I spent quite a lot of time just smelling the wine, which gave off oodles of raspberry, strawberry, confectionery, bramble, black cherry and a perfumed, violet note, plus some cola and dried fruits from ageing. The palate is even livelier, with chalky tannins and powerful fruit flavours. There’s a touch of alcohol heat yet it goes unnoticed if the wine is paired with food. On the second night, it looks even more stunning.

The Grenache here is sourced from the family’s single acre, planted in the Barossa back in 1944. The name comes from the two ducks and a cat which they adopted, thanks to the work of the local Barossa Wildlife Rescue. And that, in turn, leads to $3 from the sale of every bottle of this wine being donated to the BWR. The colour is a pale crimson. The nose exhibits notes of strawberries, florals, spices, mulberries and even a little chocolate. The most entrancing aspect is a joyful strawberries and cream note. Fresh with a silky texture and sleek tannins, the wine has very good length. Enjoy it now and over the next three to five years.
